India’s apparel export and domestic-brand business runs on large factory floors where hundreds of machines work in production lines. Orders from export buyers and fast-fashion brands peak before summer and the festive season, so units hire freshers and experienced tailors almost every month — many with free bus pick-up, canteen meals and hostel facilities for women workers.

Garment factories are covered by the Factories Act 1948, state minimum-wage notifications and India’s new labour codes. Workers on direct payroll receive PF (EPFO), ESIC health cover, overtime at double rate, bonus and paid leave; tailors often earn piece-rate incentives on top of the fixed wage. No degree is needed — 8th, 10th or 12th pass with basic machine skill is enough for most posts.
Below you will find the ranked salary table, a quick summary, a city-by-city hiring map, a 7-day plan, the six-step playbook, FAQs and links to free official portals — follow them in order to join a genuine factory safely.

- Day 1 — Write down your skills: machines you can run (single-needle, overlock, flatlock, kaj-button), products stitched and years of experience. Register free on the National Career Service.
- Day 2 — Ask 2–3 friends or relatives working in your chosen hub which units are hiring and which provide hostel or bus facilities.
- Day 3 — Apply to 8–10 factory listings on NCS, Apna and WorkIndia; note the HR phone numbers.
- Day 4 — Call HR desks between 10:00 and 13:00, confirm the trial date and keep Aadhaar and bank passbook ready.
- Day 5 — Visit 2–3 units for the machine trial — stitch neatly and steadily; speed improves with practice.
- Day 6 — Compare offers: fixed wage, piece-rate, overtime, PF/ESIC, shift timings, canteen and transport.
- Day 7 — Join the best unit, collect your ID card and confirm your UAN number for PF on the first payslip.
Step 1: Know Your Machine Skill
Factories hire tailors by machine type. Be clear whether you run a single-needle lockstitch, overlock, flatlock, kaj-button or bartack machine — and on which products (shirts, T-shirts, trousers, kidswear).
Step 2: Register on Free Job Portals
Create free profiles on the National Career Service, Apna, WorkIndia and Naukri, and mention the apparel hub you prefer. Apprentices can also look for sewing-operator apprenticeships on Apprenticeship India.
Step 3: Walk In to Factories
Most export units have a hiring board at the gate. Go with your documents between 9:00 and 11:00; HR usually conducts the trial the same day.
Step 4: Clear the Machine Trial
You may be asked to stitch a sample panel, check stitched pieces for defects or press finished garments. Accuracy matters more than speed for freshers.
Step 5: Check Wages & Benefits
Confirm the daily or monthly wage, piece-rate, overtime calculation, PF, ESIC, bonus and weekly off. Ask whether the job is on company payroll or through a contractor.
Step 6: Join & Track Your PF
Collect your appointment slip and ID card. After the first month, check your PF credits on the EPFO portal and your ESIC card on the ESIC website.
Q: Do garment factories charge any joining fee?
No. Genuine factories and registered contractors never charge workers for a job, uniform or hostel seat. Anyone asking for money is a fraud.
Q: Can a fresher without tailoring skill get a factory job?
Yes. Thread cutter, packing helper, cutting helper and ironing roles hire freshers, and many units train helpers to become machine operators within a few months.
Q: How much does a tailor earn in a garment factory?
Machine tailors usually earn ₹13,200–₹18,100 a month to start, and experienced overlock or flatlock operators can earn ₹24,000 or more with piece-rate incentives.
Q: Are garment factory jobs safe for women?
Large export units employ many women and often provide hostels, transport and creches. Prefer factories with a written appointment, PF and ESIC, and an internal complaints committee.
Q: Is overtime paid extra?
Yes. Under the labour law, overtime beyond normal hours is paid at twice the ordinary wage rate. Check that it appears separately on your payslip.
Q: How do I avoid fake factory job offers?
Avoid brokers who collect money, promise jobs without a trial or send offers only on WhatsApp. Visit the factory gate yourself and report fraud calls on Sanchar Saathi.
